Duty is Ours, Results Are God's

It was not because men saw weeping multitudes, unrestrained noise and high excitement that they believed a revival had begun... Far from aiming at stirring excitement, the preachers sought to avoid it. "It was their object indeed to make deep impressions on the hearts of sinners", observed Porter, "but to do this only by means of the truth. Accordingly, the whole tendency of things was to produce exercises of the calm, solemn pungent kind, rather than passionate and clamorous excitement."
Edward Griffin, reviewing the whole period in 1832, wrote: "The means employed in these revivals have been but two, - the clear presentation of divine truth and prayer; nothing to work upon the passions but sober, solemn truth, presented, as far as possible, in its most interesting attitudes, and closely applied to the conscience. The meetings have been still and orderly, with no other sign of emotion in the hearers than the solemn look and the silent tear."~Revivals and Revivalism by Ian H. Murray

Oh if the American church would grasp this then perhaps they would see the revivals of true Christianity for which they so earnestly look and hope for, but pursue in the wrong way. They see the deep and serious need for revival in America, they talk about it they express concern for it and some even try to evangelize and, as they think, pursue it as for hidden treasure but they do it in a way that is not prescribed by God and thus all their efforts are futile and thus fruitless and in the end they do not glorify God but merely add to their own condemnation for seeking to work salvation in another's life and in their own strength as if anything they do could possibly save someone?! They will freely admit that their own works could not save themselves but yet by their actions they seek to save another in their own strength imagining that God will bless a work that is not His own! God has prescribed the remedy for salvation and it is the earnest and sincere pure preaching of the Word of God + prayer that "the Lord's Will be done". As the puritans once said and as Jason Dohm reminds us of, "Duty is ours, results are Gods" Let us not be swayed by a phisod of emotion, rather give me a changed life, a passionate desire for truth and a faith that can withstand persecution. Give it to me 100 fold over one man who can sway the emotions of a multitude but yet lacks the fear of God.
Duty is ours, results are Gods.

"But someone will say, “You have faith and I have works.” Show me your faith apart from your works, and I will show you my faith by my works." -James 2:18

Revivals and Revivalism

We may say the problem's with America's schools today lies in many places but unless they "seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness" (Matthew 6:33), the problems will only persist. We Christians must first set the example and passionately pursue to emulate the holiness and perfection of God (Matthew 5:48), constantly emphasizing the importance of God.
"With Princeton's emphasis on the liberal arts, and the fact that students for the ministry had to undertake additional studies after graduation (either under the president at Princeton or elsewhere), it may seem surprising that the College was, in Ashbel Green's words, "eminently instrumental in preparing men to preach the gospel with ability and success." In part this is due to the stand point from which the curriculum was taught. "Unsanctified learning" -that is scholarship detached from religion- was treated as a danger and not as an acquisition to be admired. If "the fountains of science" were without "the salt of revealed truth" they would become a curse. All that was taught thus gave men a heightened view of the importance of God."
